hello!
so i got bored and decided to watch adam sandler's "eight crazy nights", as it's a movie i've always wanted to watch, and i think it'd be fun to review a movie on here. i'm not much of an expert on writing movie reviews, but i'll do my best. so without further ado, let's go on a trip and see what this movie is about!
recap:
the movie begins with sandler's character, davey stone, hanging around a restaurant filled with racist caricatures of asians, getting drunk, and not paying for his order. cops pull him over and he has sex with his car with one cop enjoying the show?? he gets caught dining and dashing, and a surprisingly decent chase sequence plays out with a nice song. it shows off how much davey hates the people here, and how much toilet humor is in this movie. the sequence ends with him crashing into an ice sculpture. he is then put on trial, where cheery tiny dwarf man whitey duvall (also played by sandler) takes davey under his wing to do community service at youth basketball games instead of sending him to jail for ten years.
whitey shows off his ridiculously hairy behind while davey shows his disdain for him. davey just continues being a jerk and whitey has a seizure. they go to the mall filled with product placements. an admittedly funny gag plays out where davey spills his fries and it spells out "bite me". davey meets jennifer, (voiced by sandler's wife) his love interest when he was a kid, who moved back to the town while raising her kid from her previous marriage. davey, as usual, is a jerk to her. another musical number plays, where more toilet humor ensues.
davey goes home while whitey communes with some deer to get him out of his jam. we then meet whitey's sister, eleanore, (who is also voiced by sandler) and talk about an award given out in the town, which whitey has wanted for thirty five years. davey harasses whitey again and he communes with the deer again. davey hangs out with jennifer's son benjamin while playing basketball where they both kick ass. unfortunately, davey's behavior rubs off on him. davey and jennifer reminisce about their childhoods on their drives home with a nice song. davey's trailer is set on fire, but he manages to save a letter from his parents that he never opened. as a result, has to move in with whitey and eleanore, where they sing again, with arguably the most impressive song in the movie, as it's a trio with davey, whitey, and eleanore all voiced by adam sandler, plus it's a cool song in general, might cover it some day for the lulz.
davey turns his life around a bit, which is genuinely nice to see after how much of a jerk he was earlier in the movie. whitey explains that davey was a happy basketball pro back in the day, but changes his tune when he learns his parents died in a car accident on the way to one of his games. davey takes his anger out on whitey for telling his story, which really sucks. davey drinks and breaks into the mall to confront jennifer. the logos of all the stores come to life and convince davey to let his feelings out by reading his parent's hanukkah card, which finally causes him to cry. he evades officers again, eleanore gets her wig back, and deer shit themselves. i'm not kidding. davey goes back to apologize to whitey, who doesn't win the award. davey sings about how the townspeople treated whitey like shit and his offenses, among other people's. the ending of the song was pretty cool with the "bum biddy biddy biddy bum bum" part that was super catchy. i should've mentioned it earlier but jennifer's singing voice was really cool too, apparently it was done by some country singer? that's really cool.
whitey goes to the mall and contemplates moving to florida to put his life behind. davey and all the townspeople apologize for being a jerk to him. he receives all the ribbons from the town, and has the happiest seizure of his life. the end.
thoughts:
so what did i think?
i... thought eight crazy nights was just okay. i didn't really like it but it's fine?? yeah, the humor's pretty vile, characters don't feel too fleshed out but the animation is really good (i haven't seen it yet but iirc it was done by either the same studio or same people that did the iron giant) there's definitely semblance of a good film here but it just feels very bogged down by all the negatives. writing could've spent a little more time in the oven but whatever is there does a fine enough job of saying what it needs to say.
all in all, eight crazy nights is just fine. not a bad movie but far from a good movie. 5/10.
so that's my review! as of writing this section i had this post on the backburner so my thoughts may be a little rusty, but i believe i still got my thoughts across. i'll probably try to keep my recaps a little more on the shorter side next time probably. idk.
thanks for reading,
